EMBEDDING POWER BI REPORT TO THE WEB

  • Some months ago, when I started using Power BI for data visualizations, I found it not possible to publish my reports to the public simply because the option to do so wasn’t showing in my Power BI service. The error message I usually got is shown below.

  • I went online to do my research as to why it wasn’t possible. I saw that I was meant to go to Settings → Admin Portal →Tenant Settings →Turn on the ability to embed to web.
  • I got back to my Power BI service only to find out that I didn’t have that option in mine. After trying so many things without result, I partially gave up hoping to find the solution some day.
  • I also discovered that people rarely embed their reports to the web, they rather share a PDF copy, let me assume some are also encountering the same problem I encountered.
  • Sometime last week, I decided to explain the situation in detail on my linkedin post to get an answer which I finally did. Thanks to Samuel Apanisile who walked me through.
  • The solution is what I’ll be writing on in today’s article.
  • The major reason I was unable to see the setting option was because I wasn’t using a microsoft generated email. I was using my organization email instead.

Steps to generating microsoft email:

  1. Click on this link: https://www.microsoft.com/en-ww/microsoft-365/business/compare-all-microsoft-365-business-products?=&activetab=tab%3Aprimaryr2&market=ng
  2. Click the Microsoft 365 Business Standard plan.
  3. Click on ‘Buy now’ (Don’t worry, you aren’t going to pay).
  4. Enter an email address, continue and click on ‘create new account’.
  5. Enter the necessary details and verify your phone number.
  6. A new account will be generated for you to sign in.
  7. Skip the ‘Add payment’ option.
  8. Your microsoft generated account is ready for use.
  • With this generated account, you can now login and be able to embed your reports to the web.

The picture below shows the comparison before and after the problem was fixed. The left picture shows before while the right picture shows after.
