In today’s blog, I’ll be analyzing the “Highway Accidents in Nigeria (Q2) 2020” data which I got from Kaggle. The dataset spans across all states in Nigeria including F.C.T.

The dataset can be gotten from here.

You can access the PDF of the powerbi report here.

The visualization tool I used for this analysis is Microsoft PowerBI.

Excerpt from Visualization

The first thing I did was to transform the datasets with power query after loading into powerbi. This included changing some attribute names, removing blank rows and rows with null values, changing some format types, imputing header rows by making first rows as headers where applicable e.t.c.

The analysis I derived from the visualization are:

  • The accidents due to speed violation was the highest with a total of 988.
  • Ogun state had the total number of accidents from this cause with a total of 104 while Bayelsa state had the least number with a total of 2.
  • Bayelsa state had no accident recorded from other causes than the one mentioned above.
  • The accidents due to phone use while driving was the lowest with a total of 8 which included Katsina, Bauchi, Delta and Ogun states.
  • Katsina state recorded the highest accidents from this cause with a total of 5 while the remaining states recorded 1 accident each.
  • 16 accidents were recorded as caused by overloading with Kano state recording a total of 4 as the highest.
  • Accidents due to tyre burst recorded a total of 109 with Kaduna state recording a total of 19 as the highest.
  • 122 accidents were recorded due to brake failure with Lagos state having a highest total of 19 accidents.
  • 49 accidents were recorded due to vehicle deficiency with Oyo state having a highest total of 6 accidents.
  • The total accident cases were 2,080 and the total casualty involved was 6,390 in number.
  • Kaduna state had the highest number of fatal accidents recorded with a total of 48 and also had the highest number of injury that resulted from accidents with a total of 552.
  • Kwara state had the highest number of deaths that resulted from accidents with a total of 77.
  • The production of plate numbers was 156,000 and the production of driver’s license was 55,000 in number.
  • The highest number of vehicles in accidents were commercial vehicles with a total of 2,124. This was followed by private vehicles with a total of 1,166.
  • The least number of vehicles in accidents were government vehicles with a total of 44.
  • 958 cars, 813 motorcycles, 491 mini buses, 462 trucks, 173 trailers, 136 tricycles, 89 tankers, 85 pick-ups, 79 suv (jeep), 15 vans, 9 bicycles, 3 luxury buses and 21 others had accidents which totals to 3,334 vehicles.
  • 4,393 males (4,196 male adults and 197 male children) and 1,142 females (970 female adults and 172 female children)were injured during the accidents. This totals to 5,535.
  • 694 males (660 male adults and 34 male children) and 161 females (128 female adults and 33 female children)were injured during the accidents. This totals to 855.

P.S: The sum of 5,535 and 855 totals to 6,390 which is the total number of casualty as written above.

Recommendation: Although accidents cannot be totally eliminated, it can be drastically reduced through caution and avoiding carelessness while driving. Proper education and enlightenment can foster this which should be a prerequisite to the issuance of driver’s license.

Conclusion: In conclusion, not all deaths are caused by nature, some are caused by reckless driving. There is need for re-education of some existing drivers which can be done by enrolling for a refreshers course in a registered driving school. The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) also has a vital role to play in this.
