  • In my very first blog, I wrote about my journey into the technology field as a data analyst. If you have not read it, please do. I wrote about the first course I took, how to transition and so on…
  • It is good to take courses but that is not the only thing you need to do. This write-up is specifically for new bees in the industry.
  • After taking courses, you might feel satisfied or feel you have arrived and you are good to go but it is not so. You can only put this to test through constant practice and getting an internship where you can put all of your skills to use.
  • To get an internship may seem very difficult but it isn’t. You can get an online internship, physical internship or remote internship. Some examples of online internships are the Hamoye Internship, KPMG Virtual Internship, you can check them out.
  • A way to get a remote or physical internship is to google search tech companies in data analysis online and reach out to them through a call. Applying by submitting your cv and all might not grant you one because there are so many applications.
  • You don’t necessarily have to see an opening before you give a call. When you call, explain yourself, the skills you have and tell them that you are looking for an internship placement in data analysis, tell them you are not keen on getting paid and offer to do a pro-bono job (free job). Explain that you are keen on getting the experience and making impact in the organization. This works most of the time, I am a perfect example.
  • Gaining experience is very key, no one wants to hire a data analyst with little or no experience.
  • Another thing is to make your linkedin profile top notch (don’t add what you are not).
  • Work on personal projects to have a portfolio you can showcase, you can get datasets to work with on Kaggle, data.world e.t.c.
  • Engage in online tech competitions in data analysis. This will also sharpen your skills and experience. You can check for competitions on Kaggle also.
  • I wish you good luck as you advance.
